Background of the study
Forensic anthropology has emerged as a vital tool in the investigation of serial murders, providing scientific insights into unidentified victims and crime scene analysis. In Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Cross River State, serial murders have presented complex challenges for law enforcement and forensic experts. The application of forensic techniques such as skeletal analysis, trauma evaluation, and DNA profiling plays a crucial role in identifying victims and reconstructing events (Ewa, 2023). Technological advancements have improved the precision of these methods; however, limitations including resource constraints and gaps in forensic expertise continue to hinder investigations (Nkem, 2024). Moreover, socio‐cultural factors and operational challenges further complicate forensic analyses in criminal cases (Okon, 2025). This study critically appraises current forensic anthropological practices in the investigation of serial murders, aiming to identify methodological gaps and propose strategic improvements. By integrating scientific analysis with investigative procedures, the research seeks to enhance the accuracy of victim identification and support legal processes, ultimately contributing to more effective crime resolution and community safety. The study will utilize case analyses, field interviews, and laboratory investigations to develop a comprehensive understanding of forensic challenges in serial murder cases, thereby providing actionable recommendations for law enforcement locally urgently.

Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in forensic anthropology, investigations of serial murders in Akpabuyo face significant obstacles. Limited forensic resources, operational challenges, and socio‐cultural factors hinder accurate victim identification and event reconstruction (Ewa, 2023; Nkem, 2024). Inadequate inter-agency coordination further complicates the investigative process (Okon, 2025). These challenges result in delays in case resolution and impede the delivery of justice for victims. This study addresses these issues by critically evaluating current forensic practices in serial murder investigations, aiming to propose improvements that enhance investigative accuracy and support legal outcomes. Rapid, coordinated action is absolutely essential for improved outcomes.

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate the current forensic anthropological practices in investigating serial murders.

  • To identify challenges and gaps in forensic methodologies and inter-agency coordination.

  • To propose strategic improvements for enhancing victim identification and case resolution.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are currently used in serial murder investigations in Akpabuyo?

  • What are the key challenges affecting forensic analysis in these cases?

  • How can forensic practices be improved to support timely legal outcomes in serial murder cases?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly enhance victim identification in serial murder cases.

  • H2: Resource constraints and coordination gaps negatively affect investigative outcomes.

  • H3: Strategic improvements in forensic methods will lead to faster and more accurate case resolutions.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses critical gaps in forensic investigations of serial murders. It will provide insights into improving forensic methodologies and inter-agency coordination, ultimately supporting more effective legal resolutions and enhanced community safety. The findings are expected to inform policy reforms, improve forensic training, and contribute to the development of comprehensive crime investigation strategies in the region.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Serial Murder: The unlawful killing of multiple victims in separate events.

  • Forensic Anthropology: The scientific study of human remains in a legal context.

  • Trauma Evaluation: The analysis of injuries on skeletal remains to determine cause of death.
